Green Building: Towards Sustainability

ABSTRACT In recent years, metropolitan cities and other areas in India are growing at a rapid pace and contributing immensely to the growth of the economy. This augurs well for the country and now there is an imminent need to introduce green concepts and techniques in this sector, which can aid growth in a sustainable manner. A green building is one which uses less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building. Considering this background, the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has launched rating system to address the National priorities which is a tool which enables the designer to apply green concepts and reduce environmental impacts that are measurable. In this paper, an attempt is made to present various green building rating system in India for new construction and existing building. Keywords: LEED, Green building, Sustainable development
