ABSTRACT
The world has witnessed industrial revolution in the past two centuries and faced serious problems of indiscriminate utilization of
energy resources. This has resulted in severe environmental degradation and very high dependence on fossil fuels. Due to this the
researchers all over the world are experimenting for the development of substitute energy resources to maintain economic
development. One of the best alternatives is Biodiesels obtained from Vegetable oils. The present study focuses on Evaluation of
performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder four stroke diesel engine with karanja biodiesel blends (B05, B10,
B15, B20 and B25) in comparison to diesel. The performance is compared with diesel fuel, on the basis of brake specific fuel
consumption, brake thermal efficiency, exhaust gas temperature and emissions of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen. From the
experimental Results it is indicated that B20 have closer performance to diesel. This study reveals that the performance of the
engine with karanja biodiesel blends differs marginally from diesel fuel and hydrocarbon emissions are less than diesel. It is also
observed that the karanja biodiesel can be used as a partial substitute for diesel without any engine modification.
